The story behind the lyrics (by Kaitlyn ni Donovan)
The song was inspired by touring, road trips, being up all night. I wrote the lyrics from the perspective of watching a film noir movie and the viewpoint of a band manager trying to keep his band out of trouble, staying up all night waiting for them while they were doing whatever they did after hours. The exclusiveness of behind- the- scenes entertainment: “all the curtains drawn.” (To get backstage at one venue there was a curtain with a burly door person in front). Thinking of the audience and fans pondering what exclusive allure that must’ve held; and the “stars” back there. Little did they know there was just a big bowl of chips and some very bad salsa from a jar and warm beer. The “betrayed” in the song was to hint what it may be like in the 1950s when maybe the band manager gave away some gossip out of spite to a gossip columnist. Just can’t quite fit all those lyrics in there!
lyrics
I stake them out
Til the dawn
Waiting under stars
That I have made
Looking up toward the LA sons awake
I’m not strong
They stay on
I’m looking up at the stars
That I have made
I’m looking up at the stars
That I betrayed
Tonight
Tonight
20 hours spent in this car
It’s getting quite bizarre
I’ll be ‘round
Curtains drawn
They’re the lucky ones
Waiting under the stars
That I have made
I’m looking up toward the LA sons awake
Tonight
Tonight
Twenty hours spent in this car
It’s getting quite bizarre
I’ll hang on
Shoegaze ist die Kunst des Dröhnens, doch „Everything Is Alive“ setzt diese Elemente nur sparsam ein. Statt Hall- und Zerr-Sounds aufzutürmen, schäumt die Musik in feinen Bläschen über.
